What is Pu er & how is it made?

Pu er (pronounced 'pooh-er', also known as pu-erh or bolei) is a fermented black tea. It is processed in a special way that allows the tea to age resulting in a smooth, mellow & earthy flavour (good things come to those who wait).

There are 2 types: raw (sheng) and ripe (shou).

The main difference is that ripe pu er goes through an artificial fermentation process whereas raw pu er is processed with little or no fermentation.

Why drink Pu er?

Tea is the ‘emperor of all herbs’.

There are plenty of studies talking about the medicinal properties of pu er, but we love to focus on how you can leverage it to achieve wellness, connection & balance.

This beautiful earthy tea helps to ground you in your day. It's an opportunity to pause and reconnect - put away your phone, let yourself get lost in the present moment or in good conversation with loved ones and refresh your heart and mind.

Here are our top few reasons to get onto the Pu er train:

  1. It tastes good: Pu er has a lovely smooth, mature and refined taste (no milk or additions necessary)
  2. It is a grounding tea and helps you take a pause
  3. Drink it anytime: lovely compliment during or after meals (great on its own too!)
  4. Drink solo or with loved ones: use it to reconnect with yourself or loved ones
  5. It can be resteeped multiple times: what value for money!

Instructions:

There are many ways to prepare Pu er. Below we show you 3 ways to brew Pu er depending on how much time you have and the amount of 'effort' you're willing to put in. Give them all a try and see what works for you!

  1. Feelin' lazy: Place your tea of choice into your tea vessel, add boiling water and let it steep
  2. The classic brew: Place your tea of choice into your tea vessel, rinse the tea with some boiling water and discard this liquid. Then top up with more water and let it steep
  3. A touch of ceremony: The classic brew, but warm up your teaware by rinsing it with hot water first
  4. The cold brew: Place your tea of choice into your tea vessel, put into the fridge and let it steep for several hours

For (1) and (2), the longer you steep it for the better (recommend min 15-20 min)
